Lineage of the Five Mountain Zen school
The Five Mountain School of Zen comes from the Korean Soen (jap. Zen) tradition. The founding teacher of our School is Ven. Dr. Wonji Dharma. Wonji is the 80th teacher in the line of Dharma Transmission through the Korean Kwan Um Jong and 85th in the Vietnamese Lamte Thien School.
In Korean Soen Inka (In'ga) typically refers to the private acknowledgment of dharma transmission from a teacher to their student. "Dharma Transmission" is used to refer to the public ceremonial version of the same acknowledgment. Both are considered equal in authority and "realization". A monk with either In'ga or the public "Dharma transmission" is qualified to hold the post of Soen Sa, or "Zen Master" for a temple, and give transmission to their own students (either, In'ga or public " Dharma transmission"). The majority of Zen Masters in Korea have only received, and only give In'ga, with the formal transmission ceremony being far more rare.
The Korean Soen lineage comes from the Chinese Línjì Zōng school of Chan (jap. Zen) and became separate around the year 1,200 CE. Ven. Wonji Sunim received Dharma Transmission in the Korean lineage on 01/28/12 and on 12/1/2012 in the Vietnamese lineage both at the Zen Center of Las Vegas. Both Inga and Dharma transmission are irrevocable and life time appointments.
